In the Community of Madrid and throughout Spain, a large number of pets are abandoned by their owners each year. Traditionally, these animals have been caught and sacrificed by local authority services, where such exist. This method of systematic killing does nothing to solve abandonment because it does not tackle the root of the problem. The high rate of reproduction of these animals and the permissiveness of their owners in allowing them to procreate freely means that there are always more animals than responsible potential owners, i.e. those who would take good care of their animals throughout their lifespan. As a result, the animals destroyed are rapidly replaced by newly abandoned strays. There are only two courses of action to break this vicious circle: educating the general public and establishing an effective birth-control programme, in order to balance the number of animals with that of responsible owners. |
The Asociación Nacional Amigos de los Animales (ANAA) conducts its “Birth Control Campaign for Domestic Pets” as a way of contributing to this line of action and in an attempt to overcome the barriers that currently exist:
The advantages of sterilizing/neutering female and male pets. It is not true that sterilized or neutered animals put on weight. Overweight is usually the result of incorrect or excessive feeding or a lack of exercise. If our pet is getting fatter, we should first correct feeding and exercise habits under surveillance by a vet. RUNNING OUR CAMPAIGN ANAA advertises the Campaign in the media, and programmes appointments with owners wishing to have their animals doctored. ANAA includes the following services in the price of the operation: Reception of the patient. Clinical examination to check on the general state of health. Ovarian hysterectomy or orchiectomy, according to standard practice. Postoperative examination after 2 and 10 days. Postoperative care in exceptional cases, provided no wilful neglect or misdemeanour is involved. Administration of the appropriate antibiotics and a protective ruff to be returned by the owner when the stitches are taken out.
