International Adoptions

What are they and why do we need them?

Given that the adoption rate in Spain is not enough to offset the high abandonment rates, practically half of the animals sheltered by ANAA find a family beyond our borders. In Northern Europe, adoption is the first choice for almost all families who want to share their lives with a companion animal.

Always working through trusted German partner associations that have collaborated with ANAA for years, forever families, foster homes, or Adoption Centers are sought in that country for those who want to help one of our animals. Once regulatory controls are passed, the journey of the animal or animals in question is organized, either through ground transportation by van or by plane.

At ANAA, we strive to learn from foreign associations that have many years of experience; therefore, besides sending animals there, we apply much of their knowledge to our own center.

We believe that the abandonment problem must be solved here, and that sending animals abroad is a temporary measure that we hope will be fleeting, meant only for animals that are already at the ANAA Center and need an outlet. The financial and personal effort involved in these trips is made due to the impossibility of finding responsible owners in sufficient numbers to adopt the more than 2,000 animals we care for each year, but our work is oriented toward promoting and raising awareness about adoption in Spain. Our wish is that it wouldn't be necessary to resort to other countries due to the lack of awareness found in our own, which causes, on one hand, a high rate of animal abandonment and, on the other, a low adoption rate.
