Sterilization campaign

ANAA develops a permanent sterilization campaign, get informed. By sterilizing your animal you will obtain great advantages. Do not contribute to abandonment, avoid overpopulation... STERILIZE IT, it's for the best!

Why is sterilization the best option?

Just like in the rest of Spain, in the Community of Madrid there is a large number of companion animals that are abandoned by their owners every year. Traditionally, these animals have been and are collected and euthanized by municipal services where these exist.

This measure of systematic euthanasia does not solve the problem of abandonment as it does not eliminate its cause. The high reproductive capacity of these animals, combined with the fact that individuals generally let them breed without control, keeps the number of specimens always above that of potential responsible owners (that is, those who would keep the animal in good conditions and throughout its entire life), so that culled animals are quickly "replaced" by new abandonments.

To break this circle, action must be taken in two ways: by educating the population and by developing a population control program that balances the number of animals with that of responsible owners.

The National Association of Friends of Animals (ANAA) carries out its "Companion Animal Birth Control Campaign" in order to collaborate along this line of action and aims to overcome the drawbacks that currently exist:

  • Financial cost of the surgery
  • Ignorance regarding the procedure
  • Fear of the surgical procedure itself

Among the different methods available to carry out this birth control in companion animals, chemical control and the isolation of females in heat require a lot of perseverance and attention from the owner, with the former also having negative side effects. Surgical sterilization of animals, an operation performed under general anesthesia from which they fully recover in a very few days, brings, on the contrary, added advantages to the fact of effective birth control.

Advantages of sterilization in females

  • Elimination of heat, meaning they stop staining at home and attracting males, additionally making the animal's anxiety and the meowing and moaning of female cats caused by this period disappear.
  • The possibility of mating resulting in unwanted puppies or kittens is completely eliminated.
  • It eliminates psychological pregnancies that occur in some females after heat.
  • It prevents uterine infections (pyometras) and ovarian cysts, as well as reducing the incidence of breast tumors.

Advantages of sterilization in males

  • It eliminates the animal's sexual desire, so they will stop mounting other animals or people and will not appear anxious and frustrated when they detect a female in heat, also preventing in many cases the urge to escape and roam away from home, ultimately improving our animal's quality of life.
  • Aggression towards other males is reduced or eliminated and, especially in the case of cats, urine marking in the house.
  • It positively influences prostate conditions and other ailments (some skin conditions, etc.).
  • After the surgery, the animals are no longer fertile, which will prevent the birth of unwanted animals that would probably be abandoned.
