Become a foster carer

What does it mean to be a foster carer?

Some of the animals, including dogs, cats, or rabbits, that arrive at ANAA require special care due to their age or their health status, both physical and mental. In these cases, temporary foster homes are needed for these animals while they receive medical care and a forever home is sought for them.

ANAA covers all their needs for food, veterinary care, medication if needed, and boarding or another home during the days you have to be away.

Puppies

The Adoption Center is no place for puppies, as many of them arrive unvaccinated and very weak. No matter how much care they are given, they can fall ill, and illnesses at these ages are usually fatal or, in the best of cases, leave severe after-effects.

Furthermore, during this first stage of development is when the socialization process takes place, so a home is the best place to learn to interact and to understand human habits and customs.

Unfortunately, only people from the Community of Madrid or nearby areas can be foster carers, because it is necessary for the puppies to be brought to the Adoption Center with certain frequency to be vaccinated and, if applicable, adopted.

Adults

For different reasons, adult animals are found at ANAA who also need temporary foster care. These may be animals that have recently undergone surgery or are in periods of convalescence, requiring a quiet place to recover and specific care that they will accept more willingly in a family environment.

Unfortunately, ANAA also has cases in which animals arrive with fears that they cannot manage to overcome at the Center; they need a quieter and more understanding environment where they can rest, observe, and appreciate the new life they have.

A foster home in these cases is fundamental, since the progress of these animals in a house is infinitely faster than at the Adoption Center.

Seniors or Golden Oldies

Sad situations also arise at ANAA when an animal is rescued from the street with a life full of misfortunes, and whose days have to end at the Adoption Center without having been able to know the warmth, affection, and joys of a home.

Finding adopters for senior animals is complicated; families usually prefer puppies or young animals to share more time with them.

However, we forget that the time we share with a senior pet will be much more intense, their capacity for gratitude is infinite, and their gaze is much sweeter because they no longer have to prove anything, just love and be loved. They are animals that, for the most part, are already trained, which eases the adaptation stage; they are calm, do not look for trouble with other animals, and require less activity.
